Sure, although the Teen Wolf characters have much better reasons not to talk to each other than do characters on most shows.

  • For one thing, the incredibly compressed timeline of the first two seasons—keep in mind that seasons one and two take place in matter of what, a couple months? All of season two takes place in “a few weeks”.
  • Allison and Scott have actual, serious communication barriers to deal with. They’ve had to meet secretly in the woods, or have Stiles pass messages. And with Allison now actively avoiding Scott et al, no communication is happening at all.
  • Jackson has only been aware of his mind-controlled-killer-lizard problem for a short time, and it seems unlikely that Danny would be able to help out—why involve him? Avoidance does seem to be a winning strategy here. Avoid people; avoid killing people. \o/
  • Everyone, including Lydia, initially thought she was suffering from PTSD, not dead werewolf possession. And with the Argents actively maiming, terrorizing and attempting to kill everyone involved with the supernatural goings on, keeping her (and others) in the dark, must have seemed like the thing to do. Sure it’s sketch to deny her agency, but it wouldn’t have been tactically foolish if she wasn’t possessed.
  • Derek doesn’t talk to anyone, ever, about anything. It’s his thing and he’s rocking it. 

Anyway, this is all to say that I don’t find the lack of communication on Teen Wolf to be especially contrived. It all makes plot and character sense to me.

Feminist Subtext in Teen Wolf

You know what I love about Teen Wolf? The fact that it actually addresses the issue of rape culture. And not in some clunky after school special sort of way. Just in a “this is a bad thing that exists” sort of way. I have never seen a show do this before. Ever.

Let’s talk about the ghost of Peter Hale in 2x07.

He smiles as if he’s harmless — just some cute guy who is flirting with Lydia. But the way he flirts is kind of rapey and not cool. In any other show, this kind of flirting would be dismissed as “normal.” But not in Teen Wolf. In Teen Wolf this kind of flirting is foreshadowing to the fact that this boy is EVIL. 

Psychopath on a killing spree EVIL.

The world teaches girls not to say the word “no” outright. And Teen Wolf understands this. Teen Wolf understands how problematic it is. Teen Wolf makes it clear that guys don’t actually need to hear the word “no” outright to know when a girl means no. A good guy listens to your “no,” even when that “no” is subtext, even when it’s implied, even when it’s phrased as a “maybe.” Only a rapist will treat an implied “no” as if it’s a yes.

Only an actual evil person will treat an implied “no” as if it’s a yes. Like, for example, murderous psychopath Peter Hale.

I love that Stiles doesn’t trust Matt. Because Mattthecameraguy is creepy. He steals information off Allison’s iPad and obsessively photographs her and there’s just something off about that guy, okay. Stiles doesn’t understand why everyone doesn’t understand this.

I love the scene in 2x08 when Matt kisses Allison. She tells him it’s okay, even though it isn’t, because rape culture dictates that a girl should never let a guy feel rejected. She tells him it’s okay, and then after a moment of reflection, she catches herself. She realizes what she’s doing.

She realizes she has every right to reject this boy. She realizes in the middle of apologizing for saying “no” that she doesn’t have to. That she shouldn’t  apologize for saying “no.” That she won’t. She turns around and tells him it’s not okay. Because Allison has more important things to do with her time than soothe Mattthecameraguy’s delicate male ego.

This, you guys.

Also, Peter’s interactions with Lydia and Stiles were obviously physically threatening, but there was an implicit threat of sexual violence too. Just things like stance, how and where he touched their bodies.

I was incredibly glad to find out that Lydia’s ‘Edward’ was young Peter—it drew a huge line between his attentions and say, Scott’s. Lydia’s initial interest in young Peter was due to feeling isolated, and because of Alison’s paen to her relationship with Scott. She wanted what they have and young Peter was being so attentive. He was interesting and he was interested in her, just when she was starting to feel like a pariah. Her attraction was based on emotional need, not mutual affection.

So we’re getting models of healthy and unhealthy relationships. While Alison and Scott can be a bit much, their relationship is essentially healthy. Most of the mistakes they make are due to their being young and inexperienced, and in a terribly dangerous situation. There’s a sweetness to them. Contrast this with Peter and Matt invading the girls’ privacy and touching them without invitation. It’s entirely possible that Matt will turn out to be any ordinary guy, and not even an ordinary (as opposed to supernatural) threat, but I do like that the show casts suspicion on him, and that Stiles and Melissa McCall (remember the lacrosse game) think he’s a bit off. New guy wanders around taking pictures of everything he finds ‘interesting’, including pretty girls, and reading other peoples’ iPads? Actually it’s a bit off.

Another smart thing the show has done is keep Stiles’ admiration for Lydia from spilling into invasions of her privacy. He doesn’t stare into her window at night. He doesn’t follow her. He doesn’t listen in on her conversations. He doesn’t demand her attention, or even really fault her for not giving it to him. He’ll take any chance he can get to spend time with her, but despite his endless, embarrassing crush, he’s the one to tell Issac to channel his own crush into emo poetry instead of anger. He can’t seem to fathom wanting to hurt Lydia for ‘hurting’ him. And that’s great.

Teen Wolf was so referential tonight!

  • Lydia is Ginny Weasley.
  • Peter is Tom Riddle.
  • The kids are the Breakfast Club.
  • Mr. Harris is both Snape AND Principal Vernon (from Breakfast Club)
  • Stiles is Batman.
  • Erica is Catwoman.
  • The trophy case—a bit of Amy’s mom (from Buffy)?
  • Loads of visual quotes from American and Japanese horror movies—too many to count.

Really leaning on horror tropes in this episode, with only a couple of lighter moments. Even Melissa tossing Scott’s room—hilarious—lead to Victoria using a pencil sharpener to send a message. Actually, the episode was very Kid!Supernatural: visceral, lizard brain horror, standing side by side with relationship drama, vaudevillian silliness, and hints of something even worse to come. 

I like it.

am i the only one who remembers derek tell erica to back off form scott because he had someone else “planned” for her ?

No, Derek was telling Erica to back off of HIM, because he had someone else ~planned for her. Then he sent her after Scott. That didn’t work out. This episode he told her to get on the good side of one of the boys. When asked which one, Derek said “either.”

When Erica saw Stiles chasing after Lydia, she saw an opening and went for it. It’s possible she never did have a crush on him, and was just manipulating him. That said, I think her Batman comment was sincere, just based on the timing.

Stiles will break your heart. We’ll happily go on record and say that, just like in Season 1, Dylan O’Brien is the best part of the show. In the season opener, he offers plenty of laughs (wait til you hear what he talks about in his sleep) and the irreverent, quick-witted comebacks we’ve come to appreciate from him. But this season, he’ll be much more than just the comic relief. Look for a foxhole scene between Stiles and Scott that will remind you just what these kids have been through over the last year — and why they’re still best friends.
